Résumé : | Vogue magazine, one of the most influential titles in the fashion world for over a century, has employed some of the greatest names in design and illustration. It has been, and remains, the privileged meeting point between art and fashion. The editorial team focused on drawing from 1909, the year the magazine was bought by Condé Nast, until the end of the 1950s, when photography took over, before drawing made a strong comeback in the 1980s, particularly in Vogue France. Painter, writer and art critic William Packer has delved into the archives of the American, French and English editions of the magazine to present us with the works of around a hundred artists, regular contributors Eric, René Bouché, Antonio, Tom Keogh, René Gruau... as well as famous painters such as De Chirico and Dali, or more recently Botero and Hockney, who agreed to submit to the constraints of the genre. Over the pages, we discover three generations of artists and a diversity of styles often linked to the major artistic movements (Art Deco, Expressionism, Surrealism...). All the illustrators brilliantly accomplished the task assigned to them: disseminating the canons of fashion and elegance of the day, retaining the essence of a style or cut, but also capturing the ephemeral, the spirit of an era.
