| Résumé : | This research paper focuses in the current situation of the South American region and its potential to become an alternative market for European fashion brands. Aiming to cover its main characteristics and challenges I have divided this study into 3 parts. The first one is a detailed analysis on its economic and social evolution during the past years to establish the level of solidity of the market. Also in this first part I will be going through its foreign policy and position towards international trading, a key subject that has represented a barrier in markets like Brazil and China. The second part of this paper goes through the role this region has played for the fashion industry worldwide, its evolution, the situation today and its perspectives. Finally, the third section covers what I consider to be one of the biggest fears for foreign investors: the political and social challenges of the region, reviewing its evolution up to this day. These 3 sections will lead us to the final conclusion which will try to establish how much of a potential market South America represents, and whether is promising for luxury brands as it is for medium-range retail brands. Since I’ll be analyzing 5 countries of the region, it’s rather important to remember that each one of them has its own particularities as sovereign states; nevertheless, I will be focusing on their similarities and treating them as a whole as far as possible. |
